Wright Medical Ordered to Pay $11 Million for Defective Hip Implant

A jury has ordered Wright Medical to pay $11 million to a woman who alleged that she suffered from a defective hip implant. The award, which includes $1 million in compensatory damages and $10 million in punitive damages, was granted to the plaintiff at a recent bellwether trial. The lawsuit was filed by the woman back in 2013 and alleged that her metal on metal Conserve hip implant loosened.  She had received the hip implant in April 2006 but began having pain in October 2012. During surgery to repair her hip, the surgeon discovered signs of metallosis or metal poisoning which had caused soft tissue damage.

The Atlanta jury found that Wright was liable to the plaintiff who was implanted with a defective hip implant and that Wright failed to warn the plaintiff of the risks related to the Conserve metal on metal implant.
